Cypress trees in the Val d'Orcia between Montalcino and San Quirico d'Orcia

album Surroundings

Two of Tuscany's D.O.C.G. wines - Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano - are separated by a strip of land where the River Orcia flows. Here the vineyards are not interrupted nor are the grapevines or winegrowing techniques modified. Crushed by the fame of the noble wines produced in neighboring areas, the vintners here decided, after years of neglect, to improve their methods of cultivation and vinification in order to assert the qualities of their wines. Their efforts have finally been crowned with a brand new appellation, Orcia D.O.C., established in March 2000, representing an ancient territorio composed of 13 communes southwest of Siena, among which the legendary Montalcino. Orcia D.O.C. is produced on the territories of Abbadia San Salvatore, Buonconvento Castiglione d’Orcia, Chianciano Terme, Montalcino, Pienza, Radicofani, San Casciano dei Bagni, San Giovanni d’Asso, San Quirico d’Orcia, Sarteano, Torrita di Siena and Trequanda.

The Val d'Orcia is a sort of imaginary bridge connecting the cities of Montalcino and Montepulciano it extends as far as Monte Amiata, presenting the perfect scenery to incite any student or enthusiast of photography. The various altitudes and exposures that characterize the landscape give an insight into the area’s unique expressions of Sangiovese — the main local varietal allowed in the composition of the Orcia DOC (60% minimum) that may be complemented by Colorino, Canaiolo, and Malvasia (Nera and Foglia Tonda), in addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Also produced under the Orcia appellation are a Trebbiano-based white and Vin Santo.

San Quirico d'Orcia | Vignoni | Bagno Vignoni | Villa La Foce | Monticchiello | Pienza

Going through San Quirico, a resting place on route to Rome since ancient times, one finds a notable collection of sights which include the Romanesque Collegiata and Palazzo Chigi (17th century), the Horti Leonini, a garden of the Renaissance. the little Romanesque church of S. Maria, preserved intact in its original state. We follow the unmade road from San Quirico to Vignoni through a landscape of great beauty. Vignoni, a little village to be found almost as it was in medieval times: the dwellings, the alleys paved in stone, a Romanesque church and a fortified tower. We descend towards Bagno Vignoni, a thermal spa patronized since ancient times for its health-giving resources. Proceeding along the ancient hilly pass we arrive at Villa La Foce, built in 1492 on the road to Rome. Acquired at the beginning of the 20th century by Iris and Antonio Origo, it has been the stage for a great cultural movement, putting the Val D’Orcia at the forefront of the artistic scene. From Foce we arrive at Monticchiello, a small walled village, with a rich history and much charm enclosed within its walls. The landscape is of the most suggestive and typical of the Val D’Orcia. Once it was an isolated place and hard to survive on the land, whereas today the region is world-famous for its beauty.

Across the valley is Pienza, her rival from of old and today. Previously it was the village of Corsignano and then, through the wishes of Pope Pius 11, who was born here and wished to build an “ideal city”, Pienza was created
