Brunello di Montalcino vines

Brunello di Montalcino vineyards. Roses are frequently planted at the perimeter of vineyards. They are still plated to preserve traditions. Roses use to serve as shepherds of the grapes, standing vigilant to warn vintners of a possible peril coming for the crops.[1]

An entire vineyard of about 3 acres is dedicated to Mozart music. Numerous loudspeakers are placed in this vineyard, in such a way as to create areas of high, medium and low sound intensity. The aim is to monitor the effects of sounds in the best possible way while allowing the great beauty of Mozart's complete work to express itself.
All compositions (about 60 hours between chamber music, symphonies oroperas) are spread out 24 hours out of 24 in the most pampered vineyard in the world. Starting with 2008 it will yield its first Brunello Wine, grown entirely among Mozart's harmonies.

Rodolfo Cosimi

"A good wine is like a good movie: it goes on for a moment and leaves a taste of glory in your mouth;
it is new with every sip and, as in movies, it born and reborn in each taster."

Francesco Illy, born in Trieste in 1953, has a family name that is world famous thanks to the quality of its coffee products. He is part of the third generation of Illys responsible for building a coffee empire. Francesco Illy fell in love with Montalcino in 1984 when as a nature photographer the landscape illuminated him immensely. In 1997, after a 10-year search, Illy finally bought a home on 55 hectares of land in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, Montalcino, known as Podere le Ripi and turned it into a biodynamic Brunello vineyard.
Since the beginning, for example, Francesco Illy wanted to preserve the original flora: flowers, herbs, the micro-flora and the mycorrhiza developed in the centuries before. To maintain this biodiversity they did not plough the land, turning it upside down but they simply moved the compact land to permit oxygenation.
His son, Ernesto Illy, an architect, designed the cantina, the golden cellar, only built using the ancient construction techniques.

www.lisini.com

Azienda Agraria Lisini and Monte Amiata in the background

One of the few estates surviving from the 19th century, Lisini is a little-known treasure — and the source of intensely rich and complex Brunellos in the classic tradition. Dating back to the Renaissance, it has had only two owners, and like the other old estates — Biondi-Santi, Barbi, Il Poggione — Lisini continues to make their Brunello in much the same way they did decades ago, with traditional vinification and aging in large seasoned barrels.
What sets Lisini apart is that it has a small vineyard of pre-phylloxera vines—historically used not only to produce wine, but to replant its other vineyards. The vineyard was planted in the 1880’s; the production is only enough to produce 300 prized bottles, too little to sell. But while other Brunello producers have planted their vineyards with nursery stock of anonymous origin, Lisini has taken hundreds of thousands of cuttings over the years for replanting throughout the estate. Large sections of the property’s vineyards are now between 40 and 70 years old, much older than most Brunello estates. The Azienda Agraria Lisini is located 1 km from the frazione Sant'Angelo in Colle and comprises 154 hectares. The vineyards cover an area of 20 hectares planted with Sangiovese Grosso.
Wines: Brunello Di Montalcino DOCG, Rosso Di Montalcino DOC, San Biagio IGT and Brunello Di Montalcino DOCG Ugolaia.

  La Màgia

La Màgia, a beautiful estate located between Montalcino and Sant'Antimo Abbey was established in 1974, when the original owners planted the vineyard. La Magia - which can also be written La Màgia - lies on an ancient paved Roman road that is said to date back to the Etruscan era. The name is a derivative of 'magione', a Tuscan translation of the French 'maison', a resting place for farmers and pilgrims. In 1979, the original owners sold the estate to Harald Schwarz and his wife Gabriella Zeitler, and Harald Schwarz's father. They left Merano in their native Südtirol Alto Adige to settle here.
La Màgia's crowning glory is its 40-year-old vineyard, which in one block covers 15 hectares and is entirely planted with Sangiovese grapes - with which only Brunello di Montalcino is made. In exceptional years
In 2011, Harald Schwarz handed over the wine estate to his son Fabian.

Pertimali | Livio Sassetti | Loc. Pertimali 329 Montalcino
www.sassettiliviopertimali.it

The Sassetti family has produced wine and olive oil in the Montalcino area for over a century. Brothers Angelo and Livio Sassetti inherited the famed Pertimali estate on the hill of Montosoli in Montalcino, and set about to divide the duties and work together at this famed estate. At the time, Angelo was to handle the vineyards, and Livio the winemaking duties. Not so surprisingly, the brothers had a few disagreements, the consequence of which is a pair of Pertimali domaines.
In 2001 Angelo Sassetti began producing wine in a small winery, which was built in a farmhouse.

Livio Sassetti and his sons Lorenzo and Luciano join him in the production of an elegant, complex line of wines.
Wines: Brunello Montalcino Riserva DOCG, Rosso di Montalcino D.O.C., Vigna Fili di Seta Rosso Toscana IGT and Moscadello di Montalcino DOC.
In addition to Brunello and Rosso, Livio Pertimali also produces the lush Super-Tuscan Vigna Fili di Seta, a barrique-aged blend of 60% Sangiovese and 40% Cabernet. The label now emphasizes the proprietor's name, Livio Sassetti, rather than the estate name, Pertimali.

in 1999 Livio Sassetti's sons Lorenzo and Luciano Sassetti purchased an estate La Querciolina in the Montecucco region. Here they produce Maremma Toscana Istriciaia (The name comes from "istrice" that in Italian means porkupine, an animal that is often seen in the vineyards. Wines: Brunello di Montalcino DOCGi, Rosso di Montalcino DOC.

Poggio di Sotto, just outside the town of Castelnuovo dell'Abate in the southern part of Montalcino, was founded by Piero Palmucciin 1989. The property extends over some 44 hectares, 16 of which are planted with Sangiovese vines all registered in the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, 4 ha. with olive groves (1.400 trees) and the residual surface with forest.
The estate is run according to the criteria of organic farming, guaranteed and certified by ICEA.

„When Piero Palmucci decided to found his own Brunello estate, he reached for the stars: before choosing a property he spent several years researching the soil types and microclimates best suited to Sangiovese Grosso, and asking experts and locals which parcels were the best. His search led him unequivocally to Poggio di Sotto, just outside the town of Castelnuovo dell’Abate in the southern part of Montalcino, where he established his estate in 1989. At the same time he began a collaboration with the University of Milan to select the finest Sangiovese clones and optimize the vineyards, from planting density to pruning and sorting during the harvest. Dedicating the entire estate to this single variety, he treated his vines to meticulous organic care and over the years built a reputation as one of Brunello’s leading producers. Palmucci sold Poggio di Sotto to Claudio Tipa, owner of ColleMassari and Grattamacco, in 2011, and Tipa and his team have committed themselves to the same quality standards and production techniques that have made the estate’s reputation.” [1]

Not far from Cinigiano and clearly visible from Podere Santa Pia, is the famous Castle of Poggio alle Mura, also known as Villa Banfi and home to one of the most popular producers of Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G. wine. Road from Montalcino to Abbadia Sant' Antimo

Within easy reach of Podere Santa Pia, 10km south of Montalcino lies the splendid Benedictine abbey church of Sant'Antimo, "Abbazia Sant' Antimo", in a remarkable position enclosed within low hills. It dates mainly from 1118. The interior is remarkable for its luminous effect, caused by the church having (in part) been built of alabaster. An absolute beautiful, tranquil and picturesque setting !
